Wage garnishment may not end immediately after paying a debt judgment

As household debt rises, specifically with credit card balances increasing by $21 billion in the second quarter of 2026 to a total of $1.26 trillion, borrowers face significant financial pressure. When unpaid debts escalate to court judgments, creditors may utilize wage garnishment to collect funds directly from a person's paycheck.

Paying a judgment in full does not necessarily result in the immediate cessation of wage garnishment. There are often procedural steps required between the settlement of a debt and the restoration of a normal paycheck.
