Theo Müller calls for minority government following AfD victory

Entrepreneur Theo Müller, the majority owner of the Müller dairy group, has called for a shift in German federal politics following the Alternative for Germany (AfD) election victory in Sachsen-Anhalt. Müller described the AfD's 43.8 percent vote share in the state as a ‘stroke of luck’ and a signal to the rest of the country that current policies are unsustainable.

Müller urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU to remove the SPD from the government and instead govern with shifting majorities, suggesting that the AfD would be the only viable partner for his proposed reforms. He expressed support for a ‘black and blue’ coalition to stabilize Germany.

Regarding specific policy stances, Müller advocated for ending support for Ukraine, halting the energy transition, implementing a debt ban, and reducing subsidies and development aid. While he supports more restrictive migration policies, he stated that an exit from the EU or the Euro would go too far. He also characterized the debate surrounding the term ‘remigration’ as exaggerated, defining it as the removal of those without a legal right to stay in the country.
