Theodor Storm adaptation 'Der Schimmelreiter' to premiere on 3sat and Theater Hameln

A modern adaptation of Theodor Storm’s classic 'Der Schimmelreiter' is set to debut through both television and stage. The 96-minute film, directed by Francis Meletzky, will have its first broadcast on 3sat on November 20, 2026, before moving to ZDF. The production reimagines the story in contemporary North Friesland, focusing on Hauke Haien, played by Max Hubacher, as he manages coastal protection amidst the realities of climate change.

The narrative explores the conflict between scientific necessity and local tradition, as Haien’s radical proposals to combat rising sea levels face intense community resistance. Olga von Luckwald portrays his wife, Elke, who attempts to mediate between her husband and the public.

In addition to the film, a mystery musical production will run at Theater Hameln from December 12, 2026, to January 3, 2027. This production features life-sized horse puppets, which earned a special jury prize at the German Musical Theater Awards 2026. To complement these releases, the Museum Hameln is hosting a themed costume tour on October 30, exploring historical superstitions and ghosts related to the era of the story.
