Great Sea Interconnector project advances through Cyprus

The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project is moving forward, with Cypriot Energy Minister Michalis Damianos confirming that the electrical interconnection will pass through Cyprus, linking it to both Crete and Israel. The project is currently awaiting further steps from the European Investment Bank, and a new due diligence study is expected to determine the exact costs and funding methods. While the EU has already committed 658 million euros, officials are looking for additional investors, such as the French firm Meridiam, to ensure financial viability and minimize the impact on Cypriot consumers.

Separately, political analyst Theodoros Çikas has raised concerns regarding the geopolitical implications of regional alliances. Çikas argues that the Cyprus issue should not become a tool for foreign strategic interests, specifically noting that a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem might not align with current Israeli strategies. He warns that the increasing militarization in the region, including Greece’s acquisition of the ‘Achilles Shield’ defense system, risks turning Cyprus into a component of broader Israel-Turkey tensions rather than a focus for diplomatic resolution.
