Theologian Leonardo Boff Endorses Ricardo Cappelli for Brazil's Federal District Governorship

Leonardo Boff, a longtime friend of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced his support for Ricardo Cappelli’s pre‑candidacy to become governor of Brazil’s Federal District. Boff praised Cappelli’s “courage and decisive strength” during the federal intervention in public security that followed the January 8, 2023 attacks on the three branches of government in Brasília.

Cappelli thanked Boff, noting the backing he is receiving from Lula’s base. The PSB executive in the Federal District approved Cappelli’s nomination last week and scheduled a party convention for Monday, where the candidacy will be formalised. The rival PT will hold its own convention on Tuesday, confirming Leandro Grass as its candidate and presenting an alliance with PCdoB, PV, PSOL, PDT and Rede.
