Theologian Rudolf Bultmann Remembered on 50th Anniversary of His Death

Rudolf Bultmann, the prominent German New Testament scholar, died on 30 July 1976 at the age of 92. Born on 20 August 1884 in Wiefelstede, Oldenburg, he spent most of his academic career at the University of Marburg, where he was appointed Ordinarius for the New Testament in 1921 and emerited in 1951. His work, especially his effort to reconcile Christian faith with modern rational thought, shaped mid‑20th‑century Protestant theology.

Recent commemorations marked the 50th anniversary of his death. A memorial address by philosopher Hans‑Georg Gadamer highlighted Bultmann’s intense presence as a teacher and his sharp, sometimes sarcastic style. The university’s theological faculty and scholars reflected on his legacy, noting his influence on generations of theologians and his role in opening modern Protestantism to contemporary intellectual currents.
