Patras hosts Transfiguration of the Savior celebrations on Aug 5‑6

The Greek Orthodox Church will mark the Transfiguration of the Savior with a two‑day program in Patras on 5 and 6 August 2026. The historic Panagia Pantokrator church in the Upper Town will be the focal point, featuring a Wednesday morning Divine Liturgy, a procession of the holy icon, an episcopal evening service with a sermon by Archimandrite Arsenios, and a night vigil. The following day will include a pre‑dawn liturgy, a blessing of the first grapes, and concluding services in the late afternoon.

Other Greek locales will observe the same period with traditional customs. In Theologos on Thasos, the “August Kyr Augustos” festival revived the fire‑jumping rite, where children leap over flames as a symbol of purification and good luck. The Orthodox calendar for 5 August also commemorates several saints, including Saint Eugenios of Aitolia, Saint Eusebius, and Saint Nona, whose memories are honored with special prayers and liturgical references.
