As heatwaves become more frequent, various technical and regulatory approaches are being implemented to improve summer thermal comfort in residential and technical buildings.

In residential settings, insulation remains a primary defense. A study by Saint-Gobain and Tipee indicates that combining insulation with thermal inertia and phase shift materials can reduce attic temperatures by up to 10°C without air conditioning. Effective external solar protection, such as rolling shutters, can block up to 95% of solar radiation, potentially reducing indoor temperatures by 5 to 8°C.

Regulatory changes are also impacting renovation strategies. In France, the MaPrimeRénov’ program has seen window replacement removed from its standard renovation path as of September 1, 2026. Additionally, since July 1, 2025, heat prevention obligations have been triggered by Météo-France's yellow alert level.

For technical spaces and workshops, alternatives to traditional refrigerant-based air conditioning are being utilized. Dry coolers, which use a heat transfer fluid like glycolated water to dissipate heat via ambient air, offer a way to maintain equipment operating temperatures without using refrigerants.
