Thermal management in electric vehicles and mobile devices

Effective thermal management is critical for preserving the lifespan and performance of lithium-ion batteries in both electric vehicles (EVs) and smartphones. In EVs, sophisticated systems use liquid cooling to manage heat, as air cooling is less efficient. Maintaining stable temperatures is vital; temperature variations of more than 5 degrees Celsius can accelerate battery aging by up to 25 percent. Extreme cold increases internal resistance and can cause lithium plating during fast charging, while excessive heat in hot climates accelerates long-term degradation.

To optimize charging, manufacturers like Tesla and Porsche recommend preconditioning the battery before arrival at a fast charger. Research indicates that frequent use of high-power chargers (over 100 kW) can lead to a 3 percent annual degradation rate, compared to 1.5 percent for those who avoid frequent fast charging.

In mobile technology, the primary cause of battery degradation during use is heat generated by intensive tasks—such as gaming or video streaming—while the device is plugged in. Some modern smartphones utilize bypass charging technology, which allows power to go directly to the processor and screen, bypassing the battery to reduce heat buildup.
