Thermal management systems face rising importance due to extreme heat
As global temperatures rise, vehicle thermal management systems are becoming increasingly critical for maintaining reliability. In the United States, 2026 marked the hottest 12-month period on record, with March temperatures averaging 9.35°F above the 20th-century average.
Extreme heat places significant stress on various automotive components, including the engine, cooling system, air conditioning, battery, and tires. Heat is generated through engine combustion and friction from moving parts like the transmission and brakes. High ambient temperatures reduce the effectiveness of cooling systems by narrowing the temperature difference between the vehicle and the surrounding air. Additionally, stop-and-go traffic reduces airflow through the engine compartment, further increasing the demand on thermal management to keep components within safe operating ranges.
