THESILO project aims to repurpose grain silos as thermal batteries

The THESILO cross-border project aims to repurpose abandoned industrial grain silos in Portugal and Spain into large-scale thermal batteries. Led by the Centro Ibérico de Investigação em Armazenamento de Energia (CIIAE), the initiative seeks to evaluate approximately 1,050 deactivated silos within the EUROACE region.

As renewable energy production outpaces current consumption and storage capacities, these structures could serve as an environmentally sustainable solution to store surplus energy. The project focuses on regions including Alentejo, Centro, and Extremadura, utilizing the existing robustness and strategic locations of these concrete structures to support the energy transition.
