Thessaloniki: Clashes erupt during anti-fascist protests
Violent clashes broke out in central Thessaloniki on October 28, 2026, during anti-fascist demonstrations organized to protest a scheduled speech by Ilias Kasidiaris at a central hotel. The speech coincided with the national anniversary of the ‘OXI’ against fascism.
Police authorities had previously issued a ban on public outdoor gatherings in the city center and the Vardaris area from 09:00 to 21:00 to prevent potential violence. Despite the ban, protesters—including members of labor unions and various activist groups—gathered at the Venizelos monument and attempted to march toward Egnatia Street.
Security forces, including MAT riot police, responded to protesters attempting to bypass police blockades by using tear gas, flash-bang grenades, and chemical agents. Clashes also occurred on Olimpou Street, where masked individuals reportedly set up barricades and threw stones and bottles at officers. Several individuals were detained during the unrest.
Political reactions were swift. The PASOK party condemned the gathering as a ‘revolting assembly of hate and intolerance,’ while the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) criticized the police intervention as an ‘unjustified attack.’ Additionally, the Greek Left Coalition and the Federation of Parents of Central Macedonia expressed strong opposition to the event, citing its provocative nature on a day of national historical significance.
