Thessaloniki-Bucharest transport axis to link Greece with Eastern Europe

European Commissioner for Sustainable Mobility and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, has announced the development of a strategic vertical road and rail axis connecting Thessaloniki to Bucharest. This 15-year infrastructure project aims to link Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania, potentially transforming Greece into the southern gateway to Europe and providing vital access to Moldova and Ukraine.

Speaking at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Tzitzikostas emphasized that the corridor could redefine the region's geostrategic importance by enhancing trade, exports, and security. Initial European funds have already been secured to begin the works.

Additionally, the Commissioner announced the upcoming introduction of the first unified European tourism policy. This initiative, expected to be presented in the coming months, aims to address labor shortages, adapt infrastructure to climate change, and promote technological upgrades. Plans also include the establishment of a European Tourism Academy to enhance human resources within the sector.
