Thessaloniki Court begins appeal trial for Alkis Kampanos murder

The Mixed Misdemeanor Court of Appeals in Thessaloniki has commenced the second-instance trial regarding the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos, who was killed during a football fan attack on February 1, 2022, in the Charilaou area. Twelve PAOK supporters are defendants in the case, which also includes charges related to the injuries sustained by two of Kampanos' friends.

In the initial trial, seven of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter with the possibility of intent, while the remaining five received shorter prison terms for complicity. However, the prosecution, led by former Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor Nikos Kallidis, has appealed for harsher penalties. The prosecution seeks to reclassify the crime as manslaughter with direct intent and is challenging the level of involvement for certain defendants.

Due to the illness of a defense attorney, the trial was interrupted and is scheduled to resume on November 27. The proceedings are being held under strict police supervision to prevent incidents, following previous disruptions in related hearings. The court will consider the case from a new legal basis, as the appeal allows for a full re-examination of the evidence and charges.
