Thessaloniki court sentences former soldier for military pipeline fuel theft

The Thessaloniki Court of Appeals has sentenced a former Hellenic Army non-commissioned officer to five years in prison for the theft of approximately 300,000 liters of petroleum from a military pipeline. The theft, valued at over 300,000 euros, involved five completed instances of theft and seven attempts occurring between 2013 and late 2014.

Four other civilians were also convicted in the case. Two individuals were sentenced to six years each as moral instigators, while the remaining two received prison sentences of three and four years, respectively. While some defendants faced smuggling charges, they were acquitted of those specific counts by the appellate court.

The investigation was triggered in November 2014 after a vehicle pulling a trailer, loaded with pipes and machinery, fell into an irrigation canal near a tampered manhole. The former military officer denied involvement during his testimony and left the courtroom before the verdict was announced; he is currently being sought by authorities to serve his sentence.
