Thessaloniki Honors Maria Farantouri on Democracy Restoration Anniversary

The Municipality of Thessaloniki presented a distinguished honor to celebrated singer Maria Farantouri during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece on 24 July 1974. The event, titled “Festival of Democracy,” featured Farantouri performing songs of the anti‑junta resistance and a speech by mayor Stelios Aggeloudis praising the cultural and democratic significance of the occasion.

The evening also included an exhibition of historic photographs by Vasilis Boziki from the municipal photographic archive, showcasing images from the early days of the dictatorship’s fall in Thessaloniki. This was the third consecutive year the city hosted the Festival of Democracy, aiming to keep the memory of the anti‑dictatorship struggle alive for future generations.
