Thessaloniki Metro expansion reduces traffic and travel times
A study by EKETA-IMET reveals that the expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro toward Kalamaia has led to a reduction in traffic volume by 2.5% to 8% and a decrease in travel times by up to 13% during its first month of operation.
The research, conducted between August 21 and September 29, 2026, analyzed data from the Integrated Traffic Management System of the Central Macedonia Region, telematics, and Bluetooth detectors. Significant reductions were noted on the Voulgari line, which saw an 8% decrease in daily traffic (approximately 4,000 fewer vehicles) heading toward the center from the east.
On the 3rd of September line, traffic toward the center decreased by 4.5% (approximately 4,000 fewer vehicles). The institute noted that these results are an “initial analysis,” as the study period coincided with the Thessaloniki International Fair and the start of the school year, factors that may influence future mobility patterns.
