Thessaloniki Mayor seeks acceleration of 6+1 urban development projects
The Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, has announced that the Greek government has accepted the municipality's requests for several key urban development projects, referred to as the '6+1' initiatives. During a Municipal Council meeting, Angeloudis emphasized the urgency of signing programmatic contracts within the next two months and passing an amendment for the cleaning of the Thermaic Gulf.
The proposed projects include the creation of 600 new parking spaces using the former Pharmaki camp and the former Northern Greece Naval Command site, the utilization of the Agios Minas complex, the redevelopment of the Toumpa archaeological site, and the creation of a 120-acre Metropolitan Park at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition (DETH). Other plans involve the Agia Fotiini area and a new indoor stadium at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Regarding infrastructure, the municipality will tender a major road paving project in early October, with a contractor expected to be selected by early 2027. This will cover major routes including Vassilissis Olga, Miki Theodoraki, Nikis Avenue, and sections of Konstantinou Karamanli and Egnatia. Additionally, several smaller projects, including new basketball courts, a Glass Gallery, and a renovated park, are slated for completion by late September.
