Thessaloniki metro western extension study due by year-end

The cost-benefit study for the western extension of the Thessaloniki metro is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This study is a critical step in preparing a dossier to secure European Union funding.

Nikos Tachiaos, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, described the extension as a highly complex and expensive project. Based on prices from the previous decade, construction costs are estimated at a minimum of 100 million euros per kilometer. He noted that archaeological findings for the primary line alone cost over 200 million euros.

Because the project cannot be funded through the National Program of Public Investment, the government is focusing on creating a reliable and persuasive case for European institutions. Current efforts include station positioning, consultations with mayors, and updating studies through preliminary work contracts.
