Thessaloniki Municipality imposes €3,000 fine for illegal waste disposal

The Municipality of Thessaloniki has issued a €3,000 fine to an individual responsible for abandoning bulky items, including sofas, a bed, and a mattress, on Apolloniados Street. The discarded furniture occupied both the sidewalk and space near a recycling bin, creating obstacles for pedestrians, individuals using wheelchairs, and parents with strollers.

Under local decision 669/21.10.2024, fines for the illegal disposal of bulky waste are scaled based on the surface area occupied. Fines are set at €500 for areas up to one square meter, €1,500 for areas between one and three square meters, and €3,000 for areas exceeding three square meters.

The municipal authorities stated they will continue inspections to prevent the conversion of public spaces into landfills. This enforcement follows similar incidents in the city center, such as on Mackenzie King Street.
