Greek municipalities open air-conditioned spaces due to heatwave

Municipalities in Greece are activating emergency measures to combat high temperatures. The Municipality of Athens has opened seven air-conditioned Friendship Clubs to serve citizens from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. These locations include sites in Agios Pavlos, Neos Kosmos, Botanikos, Kolokynthos, Agios Eleftherios, Kypseli, and Ampelokipoi.

To support vulnerable populations, the Municipality of Athens is providing water, food, and hygiene kits to homeless centers. A 24-hour citizen service line (1595) and a dedicated heatwave medical advice line are also operational. Additionally, the municipality has deployed drones and patrols to monitor green spaces and high-risk areas.

In Thessaloniki, the Municipality has also designated air-conditioned spaces, including the foyer of the City Hall and various day centers for the homeless, to provide relief during the weekend heatwave. Authorities advise citizens, particularly the elderly and children, to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and stay hydrated.
