Thessaloniki opens new pedestrian stretch of Agia Sophia and starts emergency road works

The municipality of Thessaloniki completed the first phase of the pedestrianisation of the Agia Sophia precinct, allowing foot traffic to use the newly finished section. The work includes the installation of benches, a drinking‑water fountain, lighting columns and a water feature, with the final phase expected by early 2027. Deputy Mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility Prodromos Nikiforidis said the project will create a bright, green landmark and honour Holocaust victims.

At the same time, the Regional Road of Thessaloniki is undergoing emergency works. From 09:00 to 12:30 on 24 June 2026 a single lane of the three‑lane road will be closed while metal guardrails are re‑installed at the 2+700 km marker. Additional maintenance is being carried out on the 27th Provincial Road (Machanionas) with lane restrictions and coordination with traffic police to ensure safety.

Both projects aim to improve urban mobility and safety for residents and visitors.
