Thessaloniki police arrest two men for illegal migrant smuggling

Police in Thessaloniki have arrested two men, aged 47 and 23, for the illegal transport and promotion of migrants within Greece. The arrests occurred during two separate operations in the Oreokastro area.

In the first incident, a 47-year-old Romanian national was intercepted driving a vehicle containing three Afghan nationals without travel documents. Investigations revealed the group had entered Greece illegally via the Greek-Turkish border, paying 4,000 euros to a smuggling ring member for transport to Thessaloniki.

In a second operation, authorities located an empty rental car. A 23-year-old Dutch national, who had rented the vehicle, was arrested after four undocumented migrants—three from Eritrea and one from Iran—were found nearby in a newly constructed building. These individuals had also reportedly entered the country illegally through the Greek-Turkish border.

Police seized two mobile phones and the two vehicles involved in the transport. The suspects are being processed by the Migration Management Departments of Thessaloniki and Agios Athanasios and will be brought before a prosecutor.
