Thessaloniki Port’s Project 6 reaches first construction milestone

The first caisson for the new Project 6 at the Port of Thessaloniki (OLTH) has been positioned in the Thermaic Gulf, marking a key construction milestone after more than three decades of planning. Each caisson, a pre‑cast reinforced‑concrete box measuring about 30 m × 15 m × 20 m and weighing roughly 1,400 tons, will form the foundation of a new berth that will eventually comprise 21 such units.

When completed, the expanded berth will extend the quay to 1,081 m (up from 568 m) and deepen the draft to 16.8 m (up from 12.6 m), enabling the port to accommodate larger main‑line vessels and strengthening its role as a logistics gateway for Southeast and Central Europe. President of the Port Authority, Angeliki Samara, called the development an “investment of national significance” that will shape the economic future of Northern Greece. CEO Dr. Ioannis Tsaras described the caisson placement as a historic moment confirming that the largest investment in the port’s history is proceeding on schedule. A religious blessing was performed at the site during the works.
