Thessaloniki: Eviction of 92-year-old woman with disability postponed

The scheduled eviction of Parthena Charalampidou, a 92-year-old woman living in Ilioupoli, Thessaloniki, was postponed on Friday, October 30, following a solidarity protest. Charalampidou, a mother of six with a certified 87% disability, faces the loss of her primary residence, which passed to National Bank of Greece following an auction in 2021.

Local activist groups, including the Tenants' Union of Thessaloniki and the Committee of Labor Unions Against Auctions, organized a demonstration at her home to prevent her removal. While the immediate eviction was halted, organizers warned that the threat remains and called for permanent legal protections for vulnerable citizens against housing insecurity and bank auctions.

The woman's son, Theodochos Charalampidis, stated that the family's financial difficulties began after taking a mortgage in 2009, which became unmanageable due to the subsequent economic crisis. He noted that his mother has filed a claim for acquisitive prescription regarding the property, which she has inhabited since 1960.
