Thessaloniki receives metro extension and new regional development strategy

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Thessaloniki on August 27, 2026, to present the ‘National Strategy for Regional and Local Development – Northern Greece’ and oversee key infrastructure milestones.

A major highlight of the visit was the official handover of the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria. The new 4.8-kilometer stretch is intended to improve urban mobility and create new development opportunities for the city. Officials noted that the next phase of the metro expansion will focus on the western side of Thessaloniki.

During meetings with local government, scientific, and productive sectors, Deputy Minister of the Interior Konstantinos P. Gioulekas outlined a broader development plan for the region. This includes several major projects such as the FlyOver, a new pediatric hospital, the expansion of the Thessaloniki Port (OLTH) 6th pier, and the redevelopment of the Thessaloniki International Exhibition Centre (DEITH).

The government also emphasized strengthening Northern Greece’s ties with the Balkans through regional initiatives.
