Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki face major traffic disruptions

Significant traffic disruptions are expected in Northern Greece due to infrastructure works and safety measures. In Thessaloniki, a section of the Inner Ring Road will be closed between nodes K5 (Papageorgiou) and K6 (Meteora) from 23:00 on August 24 until 05:00 on August 25. This closure, necessitated by Flyover construction, affects eastbound traffic toward Chalkidiki and the airport, forcing vehicles to detour through the city center via Stratou Boulevard.

Additionally, the BOAK highway near the Xeropotamos bridge will experience closures on August 25 and 27, 2026, from 09:00 to 17:00, to remove unstable rock masses following geotechnical findings. Small vehicles and buses traveling between Neapoli and Agios Nikolaos will be diverted via the Old National Road.

In the Chalkidiki region, a ban on all pedestrian and vehicular traffic in forest areas of Kassandra, Sithonia, and Aristoteli will be in effect on August 25, 2026, from 08:00 to 20:00, due to a high forest fire risk index. Travelers from North Macedonia via the Evzonoi border crossing toward Chalkidiki should also prepare for delays due to the Thessaloniki ring road closures.
