Missing 69-year-old fisherman in Greece's Thermaic Gulf

On 15 July a 69‑year‑old fisherman and his 67‑year‑old wife set out to fish in the Thermaic Gulf near Thessaloniki. Their private boat capsized, throwing both into the sea. The wife reached the shore with help from a private rescuer and was taken by ambulance to the University General Hospital AHEPA for treatment.

Greek authorities launched a coordinated search and rescue operation overseen by the Unified Coordination Center for Search and Rescue. The effort involved five coast‑guard patrol vessels, a vessel from the National Rescue Team, a private diver, a Super Puma helicopter of the Air Force, a coast‑guard helicopter and a coast‑guard aircraft, as well as ground patrol units. The overturned boat was located near the coast of the Naouagi area, and identification documents belonging to the missing fisherman were recovered inside.

Despite the extensive deployment, the fisherman remains missing and the search continues. The First Coast Guard Department of Nea Mihaniona is handling the preliminary investigation, and any new developments will be announced by the Coast Guard.
