Thessaloniki: Smuggler arrested after chase with migrants in trunk

A 25-year-old Romanian national was arrested near Thessaloniki after a police chase following an attempt to evade a checkpoint. The suspect was driving on the old Kavala-Thessaloniki national road and was eventually immobilized in the Asprovalta area.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered three migrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea hidden in the car's trunk. The individuals did not possess valid travel documents. According to the migrants, they had been picked up from the Greek-Turkish border and had each paid $4,000 to a smuggling ring operating on the opposite side of the Evros region.

Authorities seized the vehicle and a mobile phone believed to have been used for coordinating the smuggling activities. The suspect has been taken to face the competent prosecutor.
