Thessaloniki arson attack on Nestor family leads to three arrests

Three suspects – two men aged 29 and 24 and a 26‑year‑old woman – were brought before the prosecutor in Thessaloniki on 11 July 2026 and charged with murder, attempted murder, participation in a terrorist organization, explosion, arson and illegal possession of explosive material. The charges relate to a coordinated arson attack that took place in the early hours of 1 July 2026 at the home of the Nestor family. The blast killed Vagia Nestor, the mother of New Democracy MP Afrodite Nestor, and injured the MP, her father and two other residents. Investigators from the Anti‑Terror Service identified the 29‑year‑old man and the woman as the primary perpetrators, while the 24‑year‑old provided his apartment as a launch point and refuge before and after the attack. CCTV footage, DNA evidence and video recordings were used to trace their movements. The service says two separate groups carried out three attacks that morning – the Nestor house attack and two other bombings targeting other New Democracy officials – and that investigations into the latter are ongoing. Police transferred the suspects under heavy security to the courthouse, where strong police presence was maintained to prevent unrest, while supporters of the anti‑establishment movement gathered outside.
