Thessaloniki undergoes major infrastructure expansion

Thessaloniki is undergoing significant infrastructure transformation through a series of large-scale projects valued at over €4 billion. Key developments include the completion of the metro extension to Kalamaria, the Flyover project, and various road and railway improvements aimed at connecting the city more effectively with the Balkans and Southeast Europe.

Recent milestones include the announcement of GEK TERNA as the temporary contractor for two major road projects, the Thessaloniki–Edessa and Drama–Amphipoli, with a combined budget of nearly €700 million. Additionally, the Metlen-ATESE consortium has begun delivering new school buildings as part of a 17-unit project for Central Macedonia.

Other strategic initiatives involve the redevelopment of the former Gounou Camp into a logistics center, the development of the Thess Intec innovation hub, and various hospital and port expansions. While many projects are progressing or have been delivered, strategic goals to establish the city as a major international commercial and economic hub remain ongoing.
