Thessaloniki wolf suspected of attacking child captured

Environmental organizations and Greek authorities have captured a female wolf believed to be responsible for an attack on a four-year-old girl in Polichni, near Thessaloniki, in late July. The capture was carried out by the organization Callisto using specialized traps following a decision by the Ministry of Environment and Energy to remove the animal from the area.

The wolf, weighing 24.5 kilograms, was found to be in poor health, severely malnourished, and missing its left hind leg. Experts noted the animal had become habituated to human presence due to searching for food in residential areas.

The wolf has been handed over to the animal welfare organization Arcturos and moved to a protection center near Florina. Scientists from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will conduct genetic testing, comparing blood samples from the wolf with DNA recovered from the child's clothing, to confirm if this specific animal was involved in the attack.
