Thessaloniki woman arrested for animal welfare violations
A 54-year-old woman was arrested in the Thermi area of Thessaloniki following reports of animal neglect. Police inspections of her residence revealed approximately 200 animals living in unsuitable conditions, including 120 dogs, 70 cats, and 10 goats.
Authorities noted that the animals lacked hygienic and adequate shelter, violating animal welfare regulations. The arrest followed an incident in which the woman allegedly threatened a 35-year-old Algerian national. While the woman was released by order of the prosecutor, a preliminary investigation has been launched to examine the living conditions of the animals and determine if further legal action is required.
Local volunteers had previously called for intervention after witnessing the conditions at the private shelter. Reports indicate the woman, described by some as a collector who spent her fortune on animals, had previously sought assistance from the Municipality of Thermi without success.
