Thessaloniki's New Flyover and Metro Extension Set to Transform City Transport

Construction of a 4‑kilometre, 22‑metre‑wide flyover – projected to become Greece’s longest bridge – is advancing on the Eastern Inner Ring Road of Thessaloniki. When completed, the structure will double road capacity to about 10,000 vehicles per hour and link the PAE, Egnatia highway, Macedonia Airport and Halkidiki. The project, funded at €478 million, targets completion by 16 May 2027, with the private consortium aiming to finish earlier.

Alongside the road works, the Thessaloniki Metro is being extended from the city centre to Kalamaria, adding five new stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, Mikra). The line will cut travel time to the terminal station to roughly 15 minutes, serve an estimated 63,000 daily passengers and remove about 12,000 vehicles from the road network, lowering CO₂ emissions by around 43 tonnes per day.
