Thessaly Region develops proposal for new CAP 2028–2034
The Thessaly Region is developing a comprehensive proposal for the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the 2028–2034 period. Following an information session and workshops in Larissa, the region aims to establish itself as a distinct model for modern primary production in Greece.
The proposal seeks to address critical challenges facing the region, including water scarcity, devastating floods, and a heavy reliance on irrigated crops. The regional strategy intends to link agricultural policy with water management, energy, infrastructure, and market access. A primary demand is the inclusion of a dedicated Regional Fund for Thessaly within the national plan, ensuring resources are tailored to the area's specific needs.
To ensure the proposal is evidence-based, the region conducted consultations involving academics, institutional representatives, and approximately 150 producers from the plant, livestock, and beekeeping sectors. Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas emphasized that the CAP should act as a ‘social contract’ addressing the climate crisis, farmer income, and food security. Deputy Regional Governor Dimitrios Tsetsilas noted that the goal is to ensure the voices of those directly involved in production shape the final policy submitted to the European Commission and the Greek state.
