Thessaly and Ionian Islands see June 2026 traffic accident decline

The General Regional Police Directorate of Thessaly reported that in June 2026 there were 11 road accidents—a 56% drop from 25 in the same month of 2025. The incidents included three fatalities (down from six), one serious injury (down from three) and seven minor injuries (down from 16). Overall, 14 people were injured, of whom three died, two suffered severe injuries and nine sustained minor injuries.

Thessalian traffic police conducted 39,145 checks, recording 9,527 violations. The most common offences were speeding (2,040), driving under the influence (90), failure to use seat belts (166), failure to wear helmets (446), and mobile‑phone use while driving (146).

In the Ionian Islands, the regional police noted 27 accidents in June 2026, compared with 29 the previous year. No fatalities occurred, two accidents caused serious injuries and 25 resulted in minor injuries. A total of 34 people were injured – none dead, two seriously wounded and 32 with minor injuries.

Ionian traffic officers logged 5,184 violations, chiefly for not wearing helmets (764), speeding (512), and not using seat belts (402). Additional offences included driving under the influence (72) and mobile‑phone use while driving (41). The police also made 27 arrests related to intoxication and license or insurance violations.
