Thessaly authorities issue chestnut cultivation protection guidelines

The General Directorate of Rural Economy and Veterinary Medicine of the Thessaly Region, in collaboration with Professor Giorgos Nanos of the University of Thessaly, has issued guidelines for the proper management and protection of chestnut cultivation.

These instructions address critical threats facing the industry, particularly in the Pelion and Kissavos mountain ranges. Key challenges identified include melanosis (root and neck infection caused by Phytophthora), endothia (a fungal infection that kills parts of the tree trunk), and various insect infestations that reduce the commercial value of the fruit.

Additionally, the guidelines highlight the impact of the chestnut wasp, which weakens trees and reduces production, and the recent global emergence of the chestnut gall wasp, which causes internal damage to the nuts before harvest.
