Thessaly Governor calls for tailored 2028-2034 agricultural policy

Thessaly Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas is advocating for specific considerations regarding the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the 2028–2034 period. He emphasizes that the upcoming policy framework is a critical factor for the future of production in Thessaly, particularly in the Magnesia region.

Kouretas highlights that Magnesia faces unique challenges due to its diverse production characteristics, ranging from the Almira plain to the mountainous areas of Pelion. These areas require different approaches for crops, livestock, and apiculture. He notes that the region has suffered significantly from extreme weather and flooding, making insurance, prevention, and damage restoration central to the policy discussion.

The proposed European Commission framework shifts the focus from mere subsidy absorption to achieving specific milestones and results. Kouretas suggests that the new CAP should integrate agricultural support with broader development needs, such as water management, energy, digital infrastructure, and market access, to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector against climate risks and rising costs.
