Thessaly leaders mark three years since Storm Daniel devastation

Three years after the catastrophic passage of Storm Daniel, local leaders in Thessaly are reflecting on the destruction and the ongoing need for climate resilience.

Thanasis Mamakos, the Mayor of Larissa, noted that the storm remains deeply etched in the collective memory of citizens who lost homes, businesses, and livelihoods. He emphasized that climate change is altering the reality of urban planning, requiring infrastructure to be designed based on new, more extreme environmental data rather than past patterns. In Larissa, efforts have focused on restoring road networks, improving drainage systems, and installing monitoring systems for the Peneus River.

Makis Eskioğlu, the Mayor of Farsala, also marked the anniversary by recalling the unprecedented severity of the storm that submerged villages and destroyed property. While highlighting the solidarity shown by volunteers and security forces during the crisis, he stressed the urgent need for effective flood protection and security for local agricultural production to prevent a similar disaster in the future.
