Thessaly railway signaling repairs extended to October 2026

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has approved a three-month extension for the restoration of signaling, telecontrol, electrification, and ETCS Level 1 systems on the Paleofarsalos – Krannonas railway section in Thessaly. The new completion deadline is set for October 29, 2026, moving from the original date of July 28.

The project, managed by Alstom Transport, aims to repair extensive damage caused by the catastrophic floods of Storm Daniel. While this specific contract does not directly cover the entire Athens–Thessaloniki central axis, its completion is critical for the full restoration of safety systems, as the Rail Regulatory Authority cannot certify the ETCS system in fragments.

The total cost of the project, including a supplementary contract, amounts to approximately €40.93 million including VAT. Alstom had requested the extension, citing reasons for the delays in the progress of the works.
