Thessaly Region challenges AGET Hercules environmental permit
The Thessaly Region has filed an application for annulment with the Council of State against the new environmental permit issued to the cement company AGET Hercules in Volos regarding waste incineration.
Legal representative George Balias stated that the appeal is not an opposition to the company's operations, but a demand for compliance with environmental legislation. The Region cites serious deficiencies in the Environmental Impact Assessment, specifically regarding the estimation of hazardous atmospheric pollutants.
According to the legal challenge, there is a lack of sufficient scientific evaluation concerning the nature and quantity of emissions, including nitrogen and sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, organic compounds, and particulate matter. The Region argues that legislation requires an assessment of emissions prior to licensing, rather than relying solely on annual monitoring. Furthermore, the appeal emphasizes the need for a cumulative assessment of atmospheric burdens from other local industrial activities, such as steelworks and quarries.
