Thessaly Region funds radiotherapy machine for Volos hospital
The Region of Thessaly is initiating the funding of a modern radiotherapy machine for Achillopouleio Hospital in Volos, with an investment exceeding 3 million euros. The project is currently awaiting necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health to proceed with the procurement process.
If successfully implemented, the new unit aims to reduce the need for cancer patients in Magnesia to travel to other cities for treatment. Beyond equipment, the project will require specific building modifications and the recruitment of specialized medical staff, including doctors, medical physicists, technologists, and nursing personnel.
This initiative is separate from a broader 15 million euro regional development program for Thessaly hospitals. That program includes 19 ongoing projects for 2025 totaling 7.25 million euros, and 11 new interventions planned for 2026 totaling 7.7 million euros. Additionally, equipment procurement has been completed at Larissa University Hospital, which has also established a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit.
