Larissa recycling plant fire sparks arson suspicion and air quality alerts

A fire broke out at the FMS recycling plant in Omorfochori, Larissa, on 10 July. The company's lawyer, Stella Samara, said the blaze was likely caused by arson, noting that the facility has no insurance and that no neighboring properties were damaged. The fire was contained thanks to the plant’s fire‑prevention systems, including early detection and water mist sprinklers.

The regional authority reported that air‑quality measurements showed a temporary rise in fine particulate matter (PM) near the site, classifying the level as moderate. Other pollutants such as NOx, SO₂ and O₃ remained within normal limits. Officials expect the air quality to return to normal within hours and continue 24‑hour monitoring.

Investigations by the fire service’s investigative unit are ongoing, with authorities seeking evidence to identify any persons responsible for the suspected arson.
