Thessaly Region initiates consultation for new CAP 2028–2034

The Thessaly Region is initiating a broad consultation process to shape its position regarding the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for 2028–2034. A central information and consultation event is scheduled for August 26, 2026, at the JOIST Innovation Park in Larissa, involving producers, livestock farmers, cooperatives, and academic experts.

Regional leadership, including Governor Dimitris Kouretas, has identified several critical vulnerabilities in the current Thessalian agricultural model: a heavy reliance on subsidies, dependence on irrigated crops, and reliance on privatized knowledge and inputs. Key challenges include managing water resources amidst climate change and extreme weather events, such as floods, and addressing the future of cotton production. While the new CAP maintains specific support for cotton, it introduces conditions to prevent excessive pressure on soil and water.

The consultation aims to discuss the potential creation of a distinct regional fund for Thessaly within the national CAP framework, the future of direct and coupled subsidies, livestock management, and improved insurance against natural disasters. The goal is to transition toward a more sustainable, resilient, and high-quality production model.
