Thetford unrest: Man arrested after asylum seeker addresses shared

Police in the United Kingdom are investigating how addresses of houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) housing asylum seekers were identified and shared during recent anti-migrant unrest in Thetford, Norfolk. A man in his 60s was arrested on August 7, 2026, on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and assisting an offender following several nights of disorder where mobs targeted residential properties.

During the unrest, protesters attempted to force entry into homes, causing property damage and forcing residents to evacuate. Norfolk Constabulary reported that officers were also assaulted during the incidents. The targeted properties are believed to be managed by Serco, a firm contracted by the Home Office to provide migrant accommodation.

Concerns are rising regarding far-right activists using AI, council records, and Freedom of Information requests to map the locations of asylum seeker housing nationwide. This shift in focus from asylum hotels to HMOs follows a Home Office policy of moving more people into dispersal accommodation. While the number of asylum seekers in hotels has decreased, the number living in HMOs and other dispersal housing has risen to approximately 68,700.
