Thetis Lake Regional Park log sign undergoing refurbishment
The Capital Regional District (CRD) is currently refurbishing the 42-year-old log sign at Thetis Lake Regional Park. The restoration work, which began approximately one month ago, is expected to be completed within the next couple of months.
Recent progress includes sandblasting the log and installing borate rods to slow wood deterioration. Future steps involve completing a new upper portion of the sign and re-staining the entire log in its original grey color scheme. The CRD stated that these efforts aim to ensure the landmark remains for at least another 10 years.
The decision to refurbish rather than replace the sign follows significant community pushback. In early 2023, the CRD had planned to replace the wooden landmark with a standardized metal and wood sign, but reversed course after residents expressed nostalgia and concern regarding the park's identity. The CRD noted that the ongoing work will not significantly impact visitor use or parking at the park.
