Thái Nguyên and Phú Thọ to develop Tam Đảo tunnel
Thái Nguyên Province has approved the development of the Tam Đảo mountain tunnel project, a major infrastructure initiative designed to connect Thái Nguyên and Phú Thọ provinces. The project, scheduled for implementation between 2026 and 2029, involves a 19.65km route, including a 2km twin-tube tunnel passing through the Tam Đảo mountains. The total investment is estimated at 5,800 billion VND, to be executed via a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The tunnel aims to enhance regional connectivity, reduce travel times, and foster a tourism chain linking Hanoi, Đại Lải, Tam Đảo, Hồ Núi Cốc, and other regional landmarks. The route will connect DT. 261B in Quân Chu (Thái Nguyên) to National Highway 2B in Tam Đảo (Phú Thọ).
In tandem with this large-scale project, Phú Thọ is also accelerating various transportation upgrades. Key developments include the expansion of National Highway 2 between Vĩnh Yên and Việt Trì, and a 5.2km road connecting the new Phong Châu bridge to regional networks. Additionally, a 12.6km project is underway to connect National Highway 32C and the Nội Bài - Lào Cai expressway junction with National Highway 70B, aimed at reducing logistics costs and supporting agricultural and forestry production.
