Thiago Rangel resigns from Rio de Janeiro state assembly
Thiago Rangel, a state deputy for the Avante party, has resigned from the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj). Rangel had been serving under suspension since May following his arrest by the Federal Police.
His resignation, which he described as “irrevogável e irretratável” (irrevocable and irreversible), is reportedly intended to allow him to focus on his legal defense before the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Wellington José, who had been acting as a substitute, will now permanently occupy the seat.
Rangel is a central figure in Operation Unha e Carne, an investigation into alleged corruption and fraud involving contracts within the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat of Education (Seeduc). Authorities are investigating suspicions of overpricing in school supplies and services, as well as potential links between political figures and organized crime. During the investigation, police reportedly discovered a video on Rangel's phone showing a suitcase containing R$ 500,000 in cash.
