Thiago Ávila sues Nikolas Ferreira for defamation

Pro-Palestinian activist Thiago Ávila has filed a criminal lawsuit against Federal Deputy Nikolas Ferreira in the Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories (TJDFT). The legal action accuses Ferreira of slander and injury regarding a social media post shared in May.

The lawsuit stems from a post featuring a photograph of Ávila, who was detained by Israeli authorities while participating in a humanitarian mission to the Gaza Strip. The original content included derogatory terms and mocked Ávila by referencing environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

Ávila’s legal team argues that Ferreira did not merely repost third-party content but actively endorsed and amplified the insults by adding his own commentary. The defense claims the remarks were intended to ridicule and disparage Ávila’s dignity rather than engage in political debate. Ávila is seeking criminal accountability and a public retraction on the deputy’s digital profiles.
