Thiago Wild advances in US Open qualifying
Thiago Wild is the sole Brazilian player remaining in the US Open men's singles qualifying draw after a dominant performance on Monday. Wild, ranked 202nd in the ATP, defeated Italy's Raul Brancaccio in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in a match lasting 58 minutes.
Wild is scheduled to face American Mackenzie McDonald in the next qualifying round. To secure a spot in the main draw, he must win both his upcoming matches.
Other Brazilian players faced exits during the qualifying stages. Felipe Meligeni Alves was eliminated by Czech player Dalibor Svrčina in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Gustavo Heide lost to Austria's Joel Schwaerzler after a comeback, finishing 6-2, 4-6, 4-6. In the women's qualifying, Laura Pigossi was defeated by Greece's Despina Papamichail, 7-5, 6-2.
